australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.

anyone familiar with the music of sinisa tamamovic knows the man is an expert in techno floor fillers.... the tracks here are no exception, valentina and confused reside in the world of bold, unrelenting grooves constructed with little more than bass and drums: and they get the job done. the bass lines are distinctly sinisa, simple, catchy, and mixed exquisitely, they take on a whole new attitude when played on club systems. valentina starts things strong, its driving rhythm gains energy as atmospheres develop and an worldly vocal enters, a latin american street rhyme that gives the track some international flare. confused is more raw, employing rough drums and ethereal sound effects. either one will do the trick for peak hours and late nights, and expect to hear these all over the place at wmc 2016

the grand opening of the new label serie obscura europa sampled artists , a various artists 12 ep serie to present darkwave bands that escapes a little from the usual electronic sound of the label. on this volume 1 we will find a 90 s ultra classic darkwave hymn of the dissolved german band behind the scenes, uncomprehensively never pressed on vinyl to date. on the other hand, the polish solo act undertheskin shows with 2 cold but extremely rhythmic tracks why his acclaimed debut mini album is one of the most exciting and interesting proposals of 2015. all tracks have been analogically remastered specially for this vinyl version.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

bass cadet records is excited to introduce its new series : orbits. originally established in 2012, the label also stands a little vinyl corner on weserstrasse since june 2013, right in the middle of the always bubbling neighborhood of berlin-neukölln. curated from the recordstore, the series is dedicated to the artists who support it and make its life. leaning on strong ties of respect and friendship, orbits will consist of a slew of releases featuring some of the most inspiring and influential artists of the electronic music scene. orbits will start with a re-issue of two ron trent timeless jams out of his “dance classic” album, released on prescription on cd only in 2009.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

romina johnson is a vocalist that needs little introduction, known worldwide for her chart-smashing moving too fast single back in 2000, and now more notably for being part of the hugely successful disco group odyssey, her amazing songwriting & performing talents have taken her right to the dizzy heights of musics elite.

with releases on rush hour, mister saturday night and delusions of grandeur, nebraska is a man who needs little introduction. here, he delivers and amazing ep for heist, showcasing his talent for finding those catchy, but hard to pin-down samples. the soften the wireless ep navigates nicely between disco and house with 4 originals and an amazing tom noble remix. khans bargain will be the go to track the more disco minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line that you wish youd made up yourself. the remix, courtesy of nycs finest disco selector tom noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam full of delays and filtered drums. the b-side sees nebraska turning towards the housier side of things himself, with the blues as a perfect example of minimalistic house. here, he uses only a small amount of elements to create an intoxicating and intense groove. it wont be long breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe. ep closing track (digi only) varkala is somewhat of a special track, being dug up from an old hard disc and remastered for your listening pleasure. sincerely yours, lars & maarten

the crate-digging credentials of psychemagik’s danny mclewin are well established. even so, he’s excelled himself with the first release on spacetalk, a joint venture with leng records’ simon purnell and paul murphy.
the trio have successfully worked together a lot over the last five years, with purnell and murphy releasing a string of superb collections, compiled by mclewin and psychemagik partner tom coveney. all three men were keen to continue this partnership, and have founded spacetalk to re-release long forgotten, little-known or overlooked music, as well as previously unheard archive material from some of the artists involved.
the label’s first release is as obscure as they come. morrison kincannon’s to see one eagle fly is stupidly rare, having initially been released by its’ creators as a private press record during the early 1970s.

on a fishing trip two years ago, the two main guys behind africaine 808: d leyers and nomad - went to a tackle shop to buy some creepy crawlies (saltwater worms), not knowing that they were about to make a life changing discovery. in front of the shop a blind man was jammming on a little electronic organ, stomping his feet, singing, growling and basically making a scene. the boys were quite impressed with the fella, who introduced himself as blind double d . they offered to bring him home and record him. he turned the offer down, but offered instead that they could record him on the spot in front of the tackle shop - if they bought him a bottle of good bourbon. he explained that he would never set foot into a studio again in his life: he was sick of music production and the music industry in general, and that he just wanted this bottle of bourbon and to be left alone. the boys got him the bottle, and recorded blind d.d. on the spot with a tape recorder they borrowed from the tackle shop. unfortunately, the tape was stored in one of the tackle boxes over the trip, and some of the creepy crawlies crawled into the tape and stank it all up. this added some extra funk to the recording. with dirk and nomad s usual studio trickery and production skills, they created the two versions of this very very funky, creepy, stanky track. we hope you ll enjoy it as much as we do.

to celebrate record store day 2016, claremont 56 is proud to present something rather special – a killer single-sided release whose origins are shrouded in mystery. “tropic of capricorn” arrived at c56 hq with little or no information. while its’ humid sound effects and glistening, unfurling melodies evoke hazy memories of mediterranean sunsets and adriatic sunrises, the track’s creators live east of ukraine, in the colder surrounds of the russia. regardless of who made it, you’ll struggle to find a single that’s quite as warm, tactile and seductively groovy. built around a hypnotic, slo-mo groove, “tropic of capricorn” soothes and sedates from start to finish. its’ ingredients are relatively sparse – think gently undulating beats, toasty chords and an electric harp that gently ebb and flow like the waters of a mountain stream – but the results are nothing less than stunning.

matt karmil is a british musician currently residing in sweden. ++++ is his third album, following 2014 s pnn debut - - - - and idle033, released on bristol label idle hands earlier this year. his output also includes a variety of singles for labels such as new yorks beats in space recordings and stockholm s studio barnhus. on this new album, karmil can be heard exploring the concepts of impossible objects, reflection, symmetry, infinity perspective, truncated and stellated polyhedra, hyperbolic geometry, tessellations and lost love. while making the music that constitutes ++++ he interacted with mathematicians george pólya, roger penrose and harold coxeter as well as the crystallographer friedrich haag, and also conducted his own research into tessellation. the result is ++++, karmil s most clever, strange, emotional and fun work yet, a testament to his breadth and depth as a musician. did we forget to mention that he s an awesome party dj?

elephant moon continues its steady schedule of releases with a brand new ep from label owner john dimas and danish talent samuel andre madsen (aka s.a.m). on this fresh new release we re treated to two tracks from monsieur dimas and two from s.a.m. to open we have a quirky little space jam called moon patrol by john dimas. it has chunky percussion at its foundation with off-key chimes and cosmic pads giving it an interstellar feel. samuel s reshaped for moonwalk mix puts john s mix on a diet, making it far lighter and focusing on the ethereal elements turning it into a sweet galactic ditty. on the flip we get a sombre bossa nova ride from s.a.m., all jazzy with a grooving bassline and galloping beats. its a cool, laid back riddim from the dane and were sure youll love it. john dimas gives the track his own monday mix, bringing the tempo down even more and crafting a delicate heady rework.

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

africa is not a country. we in the west often refer to african music but what is that exactly? it could be myriad, almost unimaginably different forms of music that bear little relation to each other, as after all africa is a vast continent that is larger than the united states, australia and the whole of europe combined. these four tracks showcase some of those different forms of music from across the continent. there is some cosmic synth drenched proto-house, an afro-beat call to arms, a hypnotic juju workout and a rough and ready, relentless lo fi west african banger. all proceeds will go to human rights justice group, nigeria.

when umek introduced his moniker zeta reticula at the beginning of the century, he got the following review: “zeta reticula sounds something like a cross between basic channel style minimalism & anthony rothers electro formulas” here the main man does it once again, unleashing four pulsating electro workouts, with more than a little nod to aux 88.

as 2016 rolls through, so does fossil archive with its 4th release since its highly acclaimed beginnings in february 2015. with fossil archive’s previous release featuring as “tune of the month” on mixmag’s november 2015 techno page, this next two-part ensemble sees two very different tracks leave you with little doubt that fossil archive remains inspired to be at the forefront of all things techno.

through shards of frozen soundscapes, boss006 defrosts the stockholm sound with the bm debut of kalawila, whose ample use of sparse building techniques creates a rigid and tight groove structure. this subtle attitude fueled two tracker is what s up in 2016, especially in the bossmusik hometown of stockholm: the extended aside grasps intelligence while swiftly pushing forward. as for the flipside, this intergalactic adventure shares tight resemblance to the mystery unknown atmosphere of bossmusik s sonic universe, and sums up this little bomb in a clever and rewarding way... watch out!

the mysterious but widely acclaimed r-zone series roll on to a 15th ep now with a new four track release that is as essential as ever. opener hired gun is a tough and raw concoction with coarse, snappy snares, rough drum pings and lots of abrasive texture all making for a physical listening experience. midwinter is a deeper and more emotive jam with warm pads dampening down icy hi hats and busy synth work. it is fresh and original and sounds like little else, then captive gets all deep and space-y with smeared pads and slick metallic hits tied together with a molten acid line. lastly, exile is five blissful and beautiful minutes of atmospheric, intergalactic electronic sounds that really take you to another place

early support from raresh, akufen, and jan krueger, next up on sol asylum is non other than julie marghilano with her innerspace ep. taking the listener to another dimension of sound, she brings her range of musical knowledge to create a solid package with a stunning remix from fred p. starting things off on a analog journey with “innerspace” we move through an interstellar universe with detailed grooves full of percussive splatters and echoing synths that moves us into a dream like state of mind. conjuring the jazz planet in berlin with“katzbachjazz”you are immediately transported to a galaxy of sound with galloping percussion and a classic techno layout. using more 909 techno drum elements she creates a whirlwind of sound with a delicate touch. taking things a little bit deeper with “cosmic karma” she presents a heavily detailed drum structure full of violin experimentation that creates a dark atmosphere but still bringing an uplifting and joyous vibe. finishing off the package is something unique from fred p who julie asked to remix for her due to her enormous respect for him. the emotionally charged remix of“cosmic karma” shows a different side of fred p while still keeping his signature sound in tact. the remix takes us through an ever-evolving voyage through time and space.

as per usual, jwb presents an ep of high quality. this time with the helping hand of t. ruggieri. one can appreciate the grand scale of sounds inside a very deep atmosphere. two great remixes as pablo inzunza (little helpers / highgrade) and gus & bonso (wrong state) tops such a fantastic release.

the first spinning plates ep back in february was picked up by print media and radio tastemakers from ra and dj mag to b.traits and moxie, whilst djs as diverse as ivan smagghe and francois k slotted it into their dj bags. as such there has been much demand for a second release, and now it arrives in the form of a fascinating split ep from scene veteran andy rantzen and relative newcomer bruno schmidt, who helps a&r for the label. in fact it was bruno who came across andy’s tracks during a late night youtube session. andy, who remixed inxs and severed heads back in the day and is a sydney based producer who has been active for three decades, had upped a load of his old demos to youtube in the faint hope that one day someone might find them. and damn are we happy he did, because they are brilliant affairs that sound like little else. for his part, bruno has been a louche resident and hifi creator alongside andrew james gustav and gwenan and delivers an exceptional stripped down late night trip/early morning trip.

while being a rare patrick adams and billy nichols production, mary clark’s “take me i’m yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated disco tracks by contemporary deejays. this borderline gospel-disco gem has all the elements of a timeless disco cut, a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by mary clark. like many of peter brown’s “affliate” labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. originaly released in 1980 on ‘la shawn’, it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors.

a new long-form offering of poignant, isolationist machine music from secret boyfriend. eschewing the cryptic and compact song-sketches that characterised his 2013 blackest ever black lp, this is always where you’ve lived, ryan martin instead guides us through vast interior topographies and nerve-damaged ambiences that comfort and deceive like memory itself. the vinyl release includes a download code.

our little dirt crew sub label spiel started out in late 2013 with three excellent releases, the first two by clancy featuring remixes by urulu and prins thomas followed by a stellar ep from mercury. after a hiatus spiel is back for 2016.

decisions is proud to announce its second release: empty gallery ep by waterhouse, a melbourne based producer, dj and vocalist. the ep spans 3 years of waterhouse productions (2013-2015), charting a sonic emergence suffused with spatial, textural and emotional complexity. the ep opens with ‘breathless’, a heady rush of ambience, shimmering cymbals and field recorded textures. ‘a little sheep’ follows, progressively immersing the listener in accumulating layers of vocal melodies. on ‘3415’ rapturous choral textures encircle delayed claps and a reverb-drenched kick drum to form the most urgently rhythmic cut on the record. side a ends with title track ‘empty gallery’, in which an intricate constellation of strings, pads, rumbling sub frequencies and brusquely dry percussion meet lyrics confronting life after loss.

taking a brief detour from his normal abrasive distorted sound, pinion showcases his broad spectrum as an artist with the desire ep. the title track, desire (half measure),starts out of the gate with a thunderous half beat 808 coupled with a swinging hihat pattern that slowly works ethereal vocal slices into the forefront, accompanied with a modulating synth pad that evolves into a defining melody. the sister track, desire (full measure), has very similar characteristics as the original, but allowing a little more edge for the dancefloor to build on. the third original track, recollection shifts gears quite drastically with a 135 bpm stormer with enough soul and melody to make the uncharacteristically fast tempo seem inconsequential. last, comes kyle geiger on remix duties to round out the ep with a housier take on desire, but still enough bite to fit nicely into any techno set.

needing very little introduction here is soulful scotsman al kent, who delivers the dirty goods for his first outing on rnt. good inside and 4006 are a pair of dusty reworks, as gritty and groovy as you like. but the prize of this ep might just be come back home, the crown jewel of his decade-earlier secret sounds collection, finally getting a proper vinyl for the first time ever!
